For $5 I'd give half of them away without thinking about it. The 3-week wait was worth it, and I have yet to be disappointed by my purchases from China. If you give eBay a second chance, I got 25 J202's from China with delivery for $5. Therefore I do not see a wide difference in FET performance per part number. However, I tend to buy new devices in larger quantities so I tend to get something that represents a lifetime supply of any given part, and they are likely plucked from the same production lot. Many will say there is a difference in FET performance from device to device, and in fact the spec sheets for most FET's have a pretty wide range for the Vgs voltage. A J201, J102, or 2N5457 cannot come close in response. Not for the gain, but because a hot signal overloads very gracefully after +12dB. Rock stars put these at the end of their chain for good reason. I think it's a lost opportunity to have a more useful booster without the output network, but do what you need to do. The circuit itself is an an amplifier stage and offers about +14dB gain on top of the +12dB input.Ĭlone implementations of the EP-3 often have a resistive attenuator on the output cutting the net gain down to about +3dB. What makes the EP-3 such a good preamp is that you can hit it with a boosted signal (about +12dB) with clean headroom. ![]() The TIS158 is about $25 for 5, and their response is all over the map. I got 25 of them for $5 and paid too much. I've taken a lot of data comparing to the original TIS158, and the drop-in winner is. It will build a single stage amplifier stage, but I certainly wouldn't call it an EP-3 preamp. I could write a couple of pages on the Echoplex EP-3 preamp, but suffice to say that the 2N5457 is not a good choice for the circuit. ![]()
